What Is The Friendliest Type Of Lovebird?

Info

These type of lovebird are small parrots native to Africa and Madagascar. In the wild, they have mostly green plumage and a massive red beak. But this is only one type. The most common species to keep in captivity are rosy lovebirds, Fischer’s lovebirds and masked lovebirds. Other species are difficult to domesticate. And those who want to get such a pet will have to recreate their usual conditions at home, which is quite expensive and requires a large living space.

Lovebirds are most often chosen because of their beautiful color and mischievous character. The remaining species are very difficult to obtain and have great difficulty breeding in captivity. And also the number of some birds is quite low. These birds are very inquisitive and active. The most common species in our country are rosy-cheeked lovebirds. But you have to be careful with them, because… With their massive beak, they can injure both the owner, the type of lovebird birds in their cage, and your property in the house.

Lovebirds are also unpretentious to food and care and can withstand cold. They are quite aggressive birds and love to try everything with their beak.

Types of lovebirds

There are 9 main types of lovebirds:

  • Collared
  • Liliana’s lovebird
  • Masked
  • Red-faced
  • Rosy-cheeked
  • Grey-headed
  • Fisher’s lovebird
  • Blackwing
  • Black-cheeked

Rosy-cheeked lovebird

These birds are grass-green in color, their bright red forehead fades into pink cheeks. The tail and back may have a blue tint. The color range is not limited to this; breeders produce a huge number of color variations. The beak is usually yellow. These parrots are common pets in our homes. Fisher’s lovebird

This is a subspecies of the masked lovebird. Named after the German explorer of Africa Adolf Fischer. The biggest robbers in nature. The main color of the feathers is grassy green which turns orange on the head. The beak is red. They reproduce well outside the will, which is why mutations of other shades appeared: white, yellow, blue.

Masked lovebird

This species has a very beautiful and unusual coloration. The whole body has green plumage, the yellow chest turns into a brown neck and a black head. The beak is red. A distinctive feature of such parrots is the presence of areas of skin around the eyes without feathers.

Black-cheeked lovebird

It is easy to confuse it with representatives of the masked species, but there are differences. It has red-orange plumage on its neck. Unlike its other relatives, this species can sing very beautifully. Unfortunately, these parrots are an endangered species.

Liliana’s lovebird

They are similar in appearance to rosy-cheeked type of lovebird, only these ones have a strawberry-colored neck and head instead of red. The chest and upper part of the head are yellow. The beak is red. The main body color, like most parrots, is green.

Black-winged lovebird

The bird has green plumage throughout its body, with the exception of small black spots on the edges of the wings and tail. There is pink edging on the eyes, beak and forehead. The largest and calmest among their species.

Red-faced lovebird

Also painted green. The distinctive feature of this species is the black plumage on the inside of the wing and the orange color on the front of the head, which is why they are sometimes called orange-headed.

Grey-headed lovebird

The color of the body feathers is green. Closer to the bottom, the color becomes lighter, and the top is lighter. The head, chest, neck and beak are gray. They adapt very poorly, so they do not take root in captivity.

Collared lovebird

The rarest and smallest representatives of their species. The body length is only 13 cm. The parrot is green with an orange “necklace” on a black neck. The chest is yellow. The beak is dark gray.

We have listed the main types of these beautiful parrots and they are all beautiful in their own way. We will never see most of them in captivity because they are sensitive to temperature, food and simply will not survive in a cage, but breeders delight us by bringing out new colors of the species that are available to us.
